Beneath The Surface – a short documentary of a polluted lake dividing a community. A film by Susan Harvey and Nicki Atkinson with narration by Otago poet Brian Turner and original music by Mike Lamb.
Lake Horowhenua, in Levin remains one of New Zealand’s unhealthiest lakes.
Fought for by ancestors of the indigenous owners, the lake provided physical and spiritual nourishment. A few generations of degradation, 30 years of sewerage has turned the lake into a toxic pit devoid of life. Compounded by soil and fertiliser run off, from farming intensification and forestry harvesting. The Muaupoko are continuing to fight again to reverse the damage done to their precious heritage.
